After the tragic death of Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman, many audiences expected him to be given a posthumous award for Best Actor at the Oscars for his incredible performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. However, in a surprise move from the Academy, legendary star Anthony Hopkins was given the award for his work opposite Olivia Colman in the heartbreaking tale, The Father.

Many critics and audiences were shocked at the news from the Academy, but were still quick to praise Anthony Hopkins for his work in the role of an elderly man struggling with Dementia. Hopkins graciously paid tribute to Chadwick Boseman in his acceptance speech, which he posted to Instagram the following morning after the ceremony. For the moment it’s not clear how the story of Black Panther 2 will address Boseman’s death, but the sequel will begin production later this year.
