Superman J.J. Abrams Warner Bros.JJ Abrams has confirmed that he will not be directing the upcoming Superman reboot for Warner Bros.

Recently, it was announced that a Superman reboot separate from the ongoing story of the DC Extended Universe was in development with JJ Abrams producing and writer Ta-Nehisi Coates penning the script. The film will feature a Black Kal-El and could potentially be set in the past.

Given that JJ Abrams is involved with the new Superman project at Warner Bros. as well as his experience directing big franchise films for Mission: Impossible, Star Trek and Star Wars, some speculated that he would be looking to direct the new Superman film. However, he confirmed in a recent interview that he will not be in the director’s chair for this one:

“I will not be directing that movie, but I will say it’s a project that means an enormous amount to us and when the time is right I really can’t wait to talk about it, but unfortunately that time is not now, but I look forward to that happening when it does.”

JJ Abrams has been circling a Superman movie at Warner Bros. for years, having written a script for a potential new film entitled Superman: Flyby. He tried to get a chance to direct the film but the project was cancelled in favor of 2006’s Superman Returns. Also, while some predicted that he would be directing the film, it has been reported that Warner Bros. is actively seeking a Black director for this project.

Are you excited about the prospect of a JJ Abrams-produced Superman movie with a script written by Ta-Nehisi Coates? Who do you think will end up in the director’s chair for this project? Sound off in the comments below.

Superman was last seen in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, here is the synopsis:

“In ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.”
